If you awaken in the middle of the night and your home is on fire, from the second the smoke detectors go off and until you are sure everyone in the household is awake and aware there is a fir somewhere in the home, you can be almost assured that there will complete panic. Everyone likes to believe that you can keep a cool head in a time of crisis, but that is not always the case. Those you think they could remain calm, sometimes panic, those that you might believe would panic are often able o keep it all under control. Although if your family is ever faced with a fire in the home, no matter what time day or night it is, all homes should have a fire escape plan in place. It is not enough to say everyone get out of the house as quickly as possible, although that is basically what you want to happen. Every family is different and every home is set up and designed differently. A fire escape plan that works well for one home might not work for another.

In some homes there will be small children who are unable to get out on their own. There could also be elderly or disabled people in the house that will require help in getting out. It needs to be decided ahead of time as to who will be responsible for helping these family members to safety. No one wants anyone else in the family to be left behind, but if there is chaos taking place, it could be easier than you think to miss getting someone out until it is too late.

Each family member should also have an individual escape route from their room in case they are trapped. There should always be a meeting place outside where everyone will gather when they are out of the house. Everyone should know not to try and take out personal belongings as it could cause them to be trapped inside as well.

Only a parent should attempt to grab their purse or wallet in case the money or credit cards inside should be needed, but even money or other valuables should be placed above your own safety. The children in the home will be much better off if they still have their parents because money can not replace those.
