Infants vs Cough Syrups

It is a common fact that every year, American parents usually spend over $250 million on cold remedies for children that aren?t prescribed. Research has found that during any week out of the year there are less than 15% of children in the United States taking these medicines. However, there are a lot of disagreements among health experts, doctors, and drug companies that concern the health hazards and safety.

An FDA (Food and Drug Administration) official decided to decline a call that was made by an organization of doctors to ban the over-the-counter products and medicines for children that were under the age of 6. However, there were drug companies that advised parents to not have their children under the age of 4 take any of these medicines.

This ends up boosting the earlier health advisory that said that certain medicines should not be given to children that were under the age of 2.

However, this change doesn?t go farther than the panel for the FDA, which ended up recommending that children that were up to the age of 6 should not take these medicines because they have not studied the effects that they may have on kids, and this may create negative side effects.

This ?under-6 law? has been supported by a variety of organizations that believe that there is definitely not enough sufficient research that shows how these products may affect children.

Several doctors have taken note of the latest study that found over 6,500 children yearly, among the ages of 11 and younger, end up going to emergency rooms after taking these medicines, with about 33% of them ingesting these medicines without being supervised by a parent. Investigators in Arizona noted that there were about 10 infant deaths that were unexpected during 2006 were related to over-the-counter medicines.

This article explains the relationship between infants and cough medicine.
